Open area formula

Open area is the proportion of punching area to whole plate, Commonly expressed as a percentage. Let us take the following specification for a example  
round hole, 2MM aperture, 60 degrees staggered , 4MM pitch, dimension 1M X 2M.
Based on the above information and the following formula, we can conclude this specification that the perforated metal open area is 23%. Namely , total punching hole area is 0.465 square meters (1M X 2M X 23%) .
